Reaction Roles

Role panels, components, descriptions, permissions, and updates.

Reaction roles let members assign themselves roles from a panel. Despite the name, modern Discord bots usually use components (buttons or select menus) rather than message reactions. Oxy follows whatever the installed /reactionroles command offers.

  • /reactionrolesCreate and update role panels.

Creating a role panel

  1. 01

    Plan the roles

Create the Discord roles first. They must sit below Oxy’s bot role. Do not put staff or dangerous permissions on a self-serve role.

  2. 02

    Run /reactionroles

Start a new panel. Choose the channel the panel will live in.

  3. 03

    Select roles

Add each role members should be able to claim. Attach a short description so the panel is understandable without server lore.

  4. 04

    Publish the panel

Oxy posts the panel using Discord components. Members use those components to receive or remove roles.

Permissions

Oxy needs Manage Roles and a role position above every role on the panel. Channel permissions must allow members to see the panel and interact with components. If a click does nothing, hierarchy is the usual cause.

Updating panels

Use /reactionroles to edit an existing panel — add a role, change a description, or remove an option. Avoid deleting the Discord message by hand; the command should own the panel message.
